Exciting news out of Costa Rica today: they elected their first woman president!

To be honest, I’m not crazy about all of Laura Chinchilla’s politics, but it is heartening to see another woman become a head of state. She gets to join Michelle Bachelet (president of Chile) and Cristina Fernández de Kirchner (president of Argentina) in the Latin American woman presidents club! And then they should make a telenovela based on them, and I can die a happy lady.

Liberal media?

People like to go on and on about the “liberal media” and I’m just like, “excuse me?” The “liberal media” that crucified Hillary Clinton? The “liberal media” that couldn’t shut up about (non-existent) Iraqi weapons of mass destruction in 2003? The “liberal media” that gives moronic goons like Rush Limbaugh and G. Gordon Liddy and Bill O’Reilly the platform with which to spread their destructive ideas and patently false lies around America?

So I’m a little biased… who isn’t?

Yeah… the media is so liberal. So liberal that they are completely bewildered by the fact that a Latina woman was nominated to the Supreme Court. I like how they completely discount her many, many notable accomplishments, and come to the conclusion that she must have been nominated because she’s a Latina woman. Not because she’s a great judge. Not because she’s incredibly qualified. Not because she’s the best person for the job. No, according to our friends at Fox News it’s because she’s brown and has lady parts.

The Supreme Court needs Sonia Sotomayor. America needs Sonia Sotomayor. And Pat Buchanan needs to get back in his time machine and return to 1952.

And seriously, G. Gordon Liddy? What, are you in junior high?

Fact: America is chock-full of crazies. Fact: A lot of of these crazies hold government office. Recently, Representative Cindy Davis of Missouri voiced her opposition to the free school lunches program for children, saying that hunger can be “a positive motivator.” Never mind that 1 out of 5 children in Missouri lives with hunger. Is your kindergartner hassling you for some string cheese? Well use that as a “positive motivator” and tell little Billy to start pounding the pavement looking for some honest work!

Fact: I love Keith Olbermann.

I like how instead of realizing that she sounds like a coldhearted antagonist from a Dickens novel, she just keeps digging herself in deeper. Ladies and gentlemen, people voted for this woman, a woman who would tell a hungry child to go get a job! Can she be impeached? Please?

Note: This is not an attack against the great state of Missouri. I fully admit that some of the craziest people in America are from Alaska, and that some of the craziest Alaskans hold political office. In fact, it seems that in Alaska, we prefer that our politicians be crazy.

I can’t believe that the McCain-Palin numbers haven’t taken a catastrophic downturn in light of Palin’s recent interview with Katie Couric. Maybe people didn’t watch the interview? Maybe people were too blinded by the flash of Palin’s adorable smile? Maybe people thought it was endearing that the only Supreme Court case that Palin is even remotely familiar with is Roe v. Wade? But let’s be clear on something: the qualities that make somebody a good head cheerleader do not make somebody a good vice president, especially the vice president of a president that could croak at any time. Biden may not be as cute and charming as Palin, but at least he knows his stuff. Anti-choicers may not like his answers, but at least he knows what he’s talking about.

It’s no secret that I don’t care for Sarah Palin and that she and I are polar opposites on pretty much every issue. That being said, I also don’t care for the media treatment of Palin, the sexy schoolgirl action figure, or the VILF jokes. But what’s really galling is that McCain is keeping her cloistered away, protecting her from the vicious media. Sorry McCain, but if you want us to vote for her you’d better let her answer some questions, even if they’re real tough ones. I’m pretty sure she can handle it, and if she can’t, the voters have a right to know.

The problem with Palin

I could go on and on about Sarah Palin, like how she’s a pretend feminist, the lame things she’s done in office like make rape victims pay for their own rape kits, how she fired Walt Monegan because he was seeking federal funding to curb sexual crime in Alaska, and how she’s kind of a fruitcake. (Hey, she’s the one who said that the Iraq war was a mission from God. Seriously? She thinks that? People still think that?)

Anyway, the really upsetting thing is that I’m supposed to quit mourning Hillary and jump on the Palin bandwagon. Never mind that the only thing those two have in common is a vagina. Never mind that Palin goes against pretty much everything I believe in. She has boobies! I’m voting for her! (At least that’s what Fox News seem to think will happen.)
