Andrea Staats Paper Company

by Andrea

I won’t really call it that. That’s just a working title. And that’s what I’ve been doing. Learning how to print. And guess what? It’s really, really hard. So you owe your computer printer a kiss and a hug, because you who have never set type have no idea.

It’s not easy but it’s fun, and I’m having a ball learning how to read backwards and getting all inky. And guess what? Sesame Street can help me show you what I’ve been doing! Except the presses I’m using aren’t as um, technologically advanced. Wouldn’t you like to buy a thank you card printed on a 104-year-old printing press? I THOUGHT SO!

Crafty Alaskans

by Andrea

My mom and I have been hitting the holiday bazaars, and I have to say, mostly it’s a load of crap. Sometimes literally. Alaskan crafters have an unfortunate penchant for making stuff out of moose poop. Not even kidding. Or wreaths made out of shotgun shells. Still not kidding.

But now to spread the love. If I had a child that wasn’t a dog or cat or hamster or full-grown man, I’d definitely buy them one of these dolls:

Cute, right? And if dollies aren’t your speed, how about a monster?

From dirtyhippie1981.

This belt buckle just makes me laugh.

As does this:

Lots more cool, clever stuff can be found at Alaska Gadgetry.

I’m going to be spotlighting other Alaskan crafters this month, culminating with the launch of (drumroll please) my own Etsy shop. Oh yes. It’s finally happening. Soon you too, like Kurt, will have the opportunity to support me financially! And I have been writing in my Idea Notebook whilst high on Ambien CR (really), so you know it’s gonna be awesome.

Bert and Ernie

by Andrea

While I was at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish’s annual Christmas bazaar, look what I found:

bertandernie

Oh yes. That is an embroidered portrait of Bert and Ernie. I almost hyperventilated when I saw it. I paid $7.50 for it, but let’s be honest: I would have paid just about anything for this priceless piece of art.

And yes, it’s hanging up in my house. Jealous?

You’re a good egg…

by Andrea

Hey! Look what I did!

eggcups2

I was feeling crafty, so I blew some eggs, cracked off the tops, added some seeds and dirt, and voila! Fresh thyme and basil. Yum. I also planted some rosemary, but that one didn’t turn out so good.

badegg

It was a bad egg, I guess.

Etsy goodness

by Andrea

I adore getting mail, and I mean real mail, like handwritten letters and packages, not advertisements and bills. That’s probably why I have a ton of magazine subscriptions and do so much online shopping: for the thrill of opening a package. I got to do just that today. A new tschotchke came to live with me.

newowl

It’s a vintage Avon cream container from Elizabeth Wren Vintage, and the inside still smells faintly of cream. I can’t decide if that’s cool or kind of icky. Here are my two tschotchkes getting acquainted.

I also got some new beads for a project that I will probably never finish.

Or begin, for that matter.

holybeads

These are from SupplyPusher. I’m not quite sure what I’ll do with them, but they reminded me of Mexico so I had to snap them up. She also thew in some freebie beads, which I was stoked about.

If any of you are craftier-than-thou, I’d appreciate some suggestions.
