For the past few days, I’ve been working on a post about the ten best books I’ve read in the last decade. And a funny thing happened. I started feeling really, really insecure.

INSECURE THOUGHTS
Are you seriously going to admit publicly that that is your favorite book?
How come nothing that you’ve read in the last decade was written in the last decade?
Shut up about Harry Potter.
You’ve read an awful lot of self-help books and it doesn’t seem like they helped. At all.
David Sedaris is an awesome writer and you will never, ever be as awesome as he is.
If your aunties find out you read that book, you will be uninvited to Thanksgiving.
Why don’t you ever read books for grown-ups?
You don’t even know how to pronounce your favorite author’s name, dummy.
(Do you know how to pronounce Alain de Botton?)
So I’m scrapping that post. The insecurities won this battle, but they shall not win the war!

I had been thinking that I need to join a book club, because isn’t that what grown-up ladies do? Besides, I rarely have the energy for nightclubs anymore. A book club seemed more my speed. And then whaddya know, my bloggy friends start up a book club.
We’re going to read Half Broke Horses by Jeannette Walls. And then we’re going to talk about it. If that sounds like something you’d like to do, email me: andreastaats AT gmail DOT com and I will hook you up. (I don’t actually know why people write their email addresses that way. I’m just doing it to fit in.)
Insecure Andrea would like you to know that she is not actually a slow reader. She is a super-fast reader, which has been a source of pride since kindergarten. The “slow” refers to the Slow Movement, which is all about slowing the heck down and savoring life. Doesn’t that sound sorta decadent and selfish? Yum!

Nice work! I know - I had to like force myself into reading my first non-school book (and also non Harry Potter book) last year. It was so weird/sad that I had never read a book since about my junior year of HS. I kind of had to retrain myself to be interested in making my mind do imaginitive work, instead of seeing it flash before me on the computer or TV. ANYWAY - good job on your book club. I've been in a few of those. Good way to keep you reading.
I was really bummed when you didn't post you favorite books! I've been looking for good books to read and would love to get some ideas. I promise I won't judge. I really liked Harry Potter too but had to quit reading after the 4th book because they got too scary for me! No joke!
I wanna know your favorite books! Isn't funny how much we let our insecurities take over? Even when it has to do with people we may not necessarily know? I was thinking about joining this book club, but opted out due to having no time right now :( oh, and the email addresses are like that for 2 reasons: 1-spammers can't email you 2-if someone google's your email address the post or comment won't show I only say this, because i recently wondered the same thing! :)
Oh yay, I'll be in good company! :) I'm excited about the book club as well, though I'm on a long waiting list for the book at the library... I may need to look for the book elsewhere! By the way -- it didn't really end up snowing here! Haha, I know a couple of inches isn't much to complain about, but I've never had to drive in it so I was scared. :) Things turned out perfectly, though: the big snowstorm never really hit, but schools were canceled so there was no traffic on the way to the airport! My car was totally icicled to the ground when I got back, though!
