BEST. WEBSITE. EVER.

by Andrea

I was doing a Google image search for Lotte Lenya (who was totally awesome, by the way), when I clicked through on some crazy photo and discovered the most wonderful website ever, a joy for somebody like me who enjoys things that are accidentally funny. Go to LP Cover Lover  for what may be the most enjoyable InterWeb experience of your life. Aside from my website, naturally.

hififofum

I like how he’s got laces around his ankles, but no actual footwear. Interesting.

rumpusroom

How come I never get invited to cool parties like this?

maoistchildren

Smiling Chinese children with rifles– who knew Communists could be so cute?

salsasi

Who knew kids with drinking problems could be so cute?

pinkyperky

What were Pink and Perky doing in outer space? Receiving the Holy Spirit?

holyspirit

Because that’s what George Otis was doing, apparently.

I think a lot of things that kids are supposed to like are actually scary, like dolls. I think the creepiest thing ever is to walk into somebody’s house and find that they have a doll collection. All those eyes staring…

scaryclown

Clowns are obviously supposed to be “fun”, when in fact they are completely and utterly horrifying. And no, I have never seen It, ok, I wasn’t traumatized by a Stephen King film. I don’t even know where my fear of clowns came from. I just know that my fear is very real. As in this picture makes me crave Valium.

Awesome cat

by Andrea

I was leaving the store today when I noticed this sign tacked up over the pay phone:

awesomecat1

I thought that was pretty darn funny. I’d love to know more about who made this sign, and what prompted it. I’d also like to congratulate them on properly using an apostrophe, a skill that society has sadly all but forsaken.

Baby hamster has a name!

by Andrea

After MUCH debate, my new hamster-child has a name. Are you ready for this?

MRS. TIGGY-WINKLE!

Remember?

tiggywinkle

I like how I rejected the name “Henrietta” because it was too long and then ended up with “Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle”. But it suits her! She seems like a Tiggy-Winkle. I made a collage in honor of her christening.

Baby hamster needs a name

by Andrea

I got my hamster, and she is a doll!

hamster1-001

Mimi who?

She loves her princess castle. She got in, looked around, had a snack, and promptly burrowed into her bedding and fell fast asleep. She lets me hold her, and she doesn’t run away from me, unlike somebody I used to know. I can tell we’re going to be good friends.

The only problem is that I can’t decide on a name. Mimi’s name just sort of came to me, but usually it takes me days to decide on a pet’s name. My mother suggested “Pudge Brownie”. Kurt came up with “Little Rotundus”. I don’t want to give her an inferiority complex, so I’d like to stay away from names that reference her pulchritude.

Here are the names I like, in no particular order: Lupita, Olive, Alice, Harriet, Sally, Dottie, Cosita (“little thing” in Spanish), and Eloise. As you can tell, I put as much thought into naming my pets as most people do when naming human children. But I’m so indecisive! I need help!

What shall I name her? Suggestions and comments would be most appreciated.

My ex-mouse

by Andrea

mimi11It is with a heavy heart and much sorrow that I announce that Martha “Mimi” Mouse is a complete and total ingrate. Not only did I save her from certain death at the hands (paws?) of Sifl the cat, but I also bought her a cage, and pink bedding, and a pink igloo, and gourmet mouse food called “Tropical Carnival”. I visited with her, made nice cooing noises at her, bought her little treat boxes that you eat your way into. And as if saving her life and spoiling her weren’t enough, I also bought her a Pink Princess Play-Castle. And you know what? Pink Princess Play-Castles aren’t cheap.

And for all this love, all this care and attention and ridiculous sums of money that could have gone toward buying food for, hmmm, I don’t know, ME, what do I get in return? An ingrateful little mouse that escaped whilst being relocated to her new pink palace.

We looked for her, but alas, the basement has too many mouse-sized nooks and crannies. Mimi is gone, not even a week after she came. Not even a week after I SAVED HER LIFE. Remember how I saved her life and proceeded to treat her like a pet instead of vermin? Remember that? Because apparently Mimi totally forgot.

I feel used. I feel sad. Tears were shed. I guess all those pumpkin seeds meant nothing to her. And yet, if she asked me to, I’d take her back. Also, if the cat caught her again.

The upside of all this is that I have a Pink Princess Play-Castle all set up for the hamster that I’m going to buy tomorrow. The hamster that will love me and never leave me, and perhaps go on outings in my pocket. Oh yeah. I’m that kind of crazy.

Copenhagen Cycle Chic

by Andrea

I am absolutely in love with this website.

copenhagenbike

I’m struck by how hardcore those Danes are. There they are, riding about Copenhagen, no heed for rain, sleet, or snow. I’ll ride a bike in the summer, but in the snow? Forget it.
I think maybe it helps to live in a city that is bicycle and pedestrian friendly. Anchorage has miles and miles of trails through the woods that are wonderful in the summer, but in the winter, more often than not, the sidewalks in the city are covered with snow. Also, it’s cold. Which is why I own a car.
The only time I’ve relied on a bike for transportation was when I lived in Utah. I couldn’t afford a car, and the bike was a great way to get around. The only problem was that Provo has the scariest drivers in the world (worse than Mexico City, even) and people kept trying to run me over. Which was problematic, as you can imagine. Nonetheless, I braved the crazy drivers… until it got too cold, when I switched to the bus.

So I look at these Danes with the utmost respect, because not only do they bike year-round, but they look so darn cute doing it. I am impressed and not a little jealous.
